Plantation Lane, London

Plantation Lane is a new pedestrian link created in 2005, designed by Arup Associates and artist Simon Patterson.

Along one edge of the space a 41m long, 6m high glass screen is situated. This is covered with an image of a section of the moon and back lit with LED lights which change colour through time during the hours of darkness. The moon was chosen as a symbol of ‘the continuum between the many generations of traders in London’.

The ground plane contains texts arranged in layers and strip ground lights which follow the banding. The different layers of text represents various timelines through London’s history. The texts refer to various guilds, churches and people relevant to the timeline and the local area.
