Hebe allanii, commonly known as Hebe, is an evergreen shrub with a bushy, domed habit. Hebe allanii is native to New Zealand. In its native habitat it grows on exposed rocky outcrops, open tussock grassland and within scrubby vegetation. Its thick grey/ green leaves are oval shaped and up to 2cm long. Its small white flowers appear as terminal spikes and are attractive to pollinating insects. Hebe allanii is tolerant of maritime conditions. Necessary pruning should be carried out after flowering.

Euonymus vagans, commonly known as Spindle, is an evergreen shrub with a bushy, spreading habit. Euonymus vagans is native to south China, Tibet, Nepal north east India, Laos and Myanmar. In its native habitat, Euonymus vagans grows in mixed woodlands and scrub. Its glossy dark green leaves are ovate. Its white flowers are small and insignificant. These are followed by orange/ red berries which persist on the plant during the winter months. Euonymus vagans is not widely available commercially in the UK.

Pulmonaria saccharata ‘Leopard’

Pulmonaria saccharata ‘Leopard’, commonly known as Lungwort, Bethlehem Sage or Jerusalem Sage, is a semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial with a clump forming habit. The species, Pulmonaria saccharata, is native to France and Italy. In its native habitat it grows in woodlands and woodland edges. Pulmonaria saccharata ‘Leopard’ has dark green leaves with silver blotches and their upper surface is hairy. Its pale purple to deep pink flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, including bees. Its roots are rhizomes which aid its spread. Pulmonaria saccharata ‘Leopard’ may be used as an effective ground cover perennial suitable for woodland or understory planting. It requires little maintenance and large clumps may be lifted and divided in autumn.
